Company Overview

Oportun (Nasdaq: OPRT) is a financial services company and digital platform that provides responsible consumer credit to hardworking people. Using A.I.-driven models that are built on years of proprietary customer insights and billions of unique data points, we have extended millions of loans and billions in affordable credit, providing our customers with alternatives to payday and auto title loans. In recognition of our responsibly designed products which help consumers build their credit history, we have been certified as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) since 2009.

Since extending our first loan in 2006, Oportun has made over 4 million loans, totaling over $10 billion to hardworking low- and moderate-income individuals. In turn, Oportun has helped more than 905,000 people begin establishing the credit history required to enter the financial mainstream. At the same time, Oportun’s customers have saved an estimated $1.9 billion in interest and fees compared to the alternatives typically available to them.

Department Overview

The Design team @ Oportun is dedicated to the cultivation, delivery, and thoughtful reflection on the systems, mechanisms, languages, and assets that our customers (internal and external) interact with on a daily basis. That seems like a lot, right? The brass tacks of our design philosophy is actually quite simple: we succeed in our obsession—for our customers, their unique needs, their present challenges, and their future goals. We model and teach empathy, we sweat the details, and we deliver experiences that encourage beneficial (and delightful!) outcomes.

We want to grow our design capabilities by adding an experienced Product Designer. We’re looking not only for a proven designer, but for a great team member--someone who is comfortable working with our researchers, engineers, key stakeholders, and product managers to bring the next step in our company vision to life. Product Designers are involved in every aspect of the product design and development process. Your skillset utilizes the full range of product design, interaction design, and visual design skills.

In our team, we put a high degree of trust in our teammates to deliver against the commitments we make to each other and to our business partners. Therefore, you will need to demonstrate a high degree of accountability, the ability to spot a problem + own it to resolution and the ability to inspire others to cross the finish line strong.

  • A customer-first sensibility—taking onboard the challenges our customers face and, in the process, proposing designs that meet their needs.
  • Proven and well-researched experience with patterns and what makes a user experience good or bad—something beyond opinion and rooted in experience will help build consensus with broad viewpoints.
  • Designing beyond just what “looks good”—composition, clean balance of elements, and useful interactions are all critical to providing the best possible experience to our customers.
  • Putting pen to paper (or tablet, or whiteboard, or Figma)—the ability to rapidly ideate and mockup your designs, in collaboration with product owners, stakeholders, and engineers.
  • You consciously innovate—there’s a balance between replicating existing and proven patterns and driving the design language of Oportun forward. We want a designer who knows the best opportunities to provide unique experiences to our customers that will provide benefit, elegance, and joy to the overall customer experience.
  • You like making your own icons, defining design standards and guides, and document to a pixel-perfect level the finals you deliver to your teammates.
  • In complicated user experiences (many of our customers are applying for credit for the very first time!) you can achieve a healthy balance between simplicity and inspiration in the designs that you create.

  • 5+ years of design experience (and/or a portfolio that blows us away)
  • Proven and reputable experience designing user interfaces and digital assets for a publicly available, consumer-focused web application (with current production URLs)
  • Strong responsive and mobile-first design background, with expert-level understanding of viewport constraints and best practices around scaling designs between different device types.
  • Expert level understanding of design standards, trends, patterns, workflows, and an amazing portfolio to back it up!
  • A collaborative, positive, and customer-centric attitude both with the work you do and the way you get it done
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Design discipline (or equivalent experience)

  • Have designed for financial institutions for heavily regulated institutions with a lot of compliance oversight
  • Are a master at Figma
  • Really want to make a difference in our customers lives and apply your unique skillset to this effort
