Department Overview



We are growing our world-class team of mission-driven risk managers who are passionate about broadening financial inclusion by untapping insights from alternative data. Be part of the team responsible for developing and running Oportun’s marketing optimization platform that leverage Oportun’s core intellectual property for scoring risk for underserved consumers that often lack a traditional credit score or are mis-scored by traditional credit bureaus. In this role you will be working with large and diverse alternative data sets and machine learning to execute multi-product and multi-channel marketing programs.  You will also drive growth and optimize marketing spend across multiple products and channels by leveraging alternative data to help predict which consumers would likely be interested in one of Oportun’s affordable, credit building lending products.



As a Sr. Analyst, Business Analytics you will work on analytics, reporting, profitability analysis and product development for the Risk team.  This is a highly visible role that will help ensure Oportun continues to deliver strong growth while managing its credit quality.  You will partner with other world-class talents to develop the next generation of acquisition channels.  You will partner with product teams and other risk teams to identify opportunities, build out business cases, perform the appropriate analysis, create and present recommendations, work with the business to execute recommendations and finally create the reporting needed to track the results.


  • Lead workstreams for building out future acquisition channels and platform integrations with lead aggregators and partners
  • Partner with Product Managers and Engineers to implement future acquisition channels
  • Develop risk strategies leveraging credit bureau and alternative data and then implement risk models and risk strategy into partner’s prequalification engine
  • Determine profitability at the margin. Recommend changes to risk strategies to maximize NPV and ensure required return for all risk segments
  • Develop effective communications and action-oriented presentations to drive strategy and manage expectations of stakeholders
  • Implement machine learning models and strategies with lead aggregators as well as in Oportun’s risk engine
  • Aid in the development of machine learning risk and targeting models using account performance data, bureau data, demographic data and alternative data
  • Develop and maintain operations and management reporting KPI’s



  • Bachelor’s in Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Economics or other quantitative discipline. Master’s preferred.
  • A relentless problem solver, out of the box thinker, and proven track record to drive business results in a timely manner
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced start-up environment and meet aggressive deadlines while ensuring flawless execution
  • 2+ years of analytical experience in driving growth via digital and traditional marketing channels while managing credit risk
  • Ability to demonstrate financial and business acumen (e.g., understands NPV, IRR, ROE, etc.)
  • Excellent SQL (or similar language) programming skills. Preferred: Python and PySpark
  • Preferred: Marketing experience
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills needed to manage partnerships with internal teams and external vendors
